Road Book

It is again under a sunny sky that we leave Hankasalmi to discover the “ thousand lakes area”. Today, doing a speed rally is all the more out of question since it will not take a long time to realize that the “aerial itinerary” promised by the road book is vwell named! On the programme of today , 390 km of tracks surrounded by fir trees and lakes which harshly put to the test the suspension of the vehicles.
Adrienne, Evelyne et Jeanine discover by chance the small village of Pyhäjärvi where stands a house with an impressive collection of rings of all kinds. They are told that the rings used to be a useful way to exchange information between the surrounding villages. Although it is nowadays much easier than before to communicate, we remain astonished each time we see an isolated house on the edge of the track.
It is precisely at the end of a track which had been rather difficult to find that Arne and Kirstie welcome us with open arms : this stopping place to this charming Finnish couple has become ritual. After having pitch our tents in the field close to their house, we can visit the little shop they have improvised for us. Those who were not convinced by the effectiveness of the product “ OFF” to fight against mosquistos ( rather agressive in this area) can buy there a special home-made oil issued from silver birch. Just by smelling it, we understand why the mosquitos suddenly stand aloof from us! Finally, the evening ends with an air of folklore coming rom the Azores! ( teams n° 1 and 20).
